- Varsity Swim Team -

The University of Guelph has had a long successful history in the pool with both the Men’s and Woman’s Teams accumulating over 75 medals in the past 10 OUA Championships and consistently placing top 5. With a vast majority of the team being in their early years of University, the team has a very high potential in the upcoming years. The 2020-2021 season was the swim team's best academic results with dozens of athletes, both male and female, achieving an overall average of 80% or higher in their respective field of study during the 2020-2021 campaign.

The University of Guelph swim team works together, thrives off of team spirit and is dedicated, determined, and committed to our sport and academics. We strive for bettering ourselves on a daily basis and assisting one another along the way. We train smart and with precision to ensure the success of ourselves as well as everyone else in the pool. The University of Guelph swim team is an inclusive team and supports all athletes while still remembering to be kind, caring and accountable to themselves and each other regardless of whatever is thrown in their way.

Team Breakdown

The competition team consists of 18 women and 18 men. With the practice team the University can carry an additional 2 athletes from each gender to make a total of 20 swimmers on both the men’s and women’s teams (maximum of 40 total on the varsity team). Both competition and practice teams are decided after tryouts but are subject to change throughout the year.

Both groups train together every day and each swimmer is required to attend a minimum of 6 practices weekly to be eligible for the competition team. Practice team does compete at home meets but do not attend travel meets.

Scholarship Opportunities

The University of Guelph Varsity Swim team offers a few athletic scholarships each year to incoming swimmers who meet academic (≥ 80% average) and swimming standards (within 4% of the short course U-Sports time for the upcoming swim year). Returning athletes must hold an academic average of (≥ 60% average) as well as the swimming standards.

The coaches will be in contact with the swimmers who will be receiving scholarships, as well as more information on them. Academic Entrance Scholarship opportunities require an 85% average and are determined by the University itself.

AbbyPhoto TressaPhoto Practice Schedule 2022-2023

The University of Guelph’s Varsity Swim Team offers a certain degree of autonomy with swim practices to help work with each athlete’s schedule and preferences. Each swimmer is required to attend a minimum of 6 practices weekly to be eligible for the competition team. Members of teams Elite and Varsity will be decided in September based on previous times and tryout performance.

Practices will differ based on the focus for that day's practice (e.g. stroke, distance, hyopxic, threshold, etc.) When you have your meeting with Chantique in September you can discuss how many/which practices would be best for your goals. There is team activation before every practice, so swimmers should always arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start of practice.

SSN - 3rd floor, library

HPC - JT Powell Building

The SAM Program is a unique program to the University of Guelph and is designed specifically for student athletes to ensure that they have the resources available to be successful both in the pool and in the classroom.

During certain time periods, the third floor of the library is reserved for student athletes only to allow for a focused study space.

The Student Support Network offers drop-in peer support throughout the year. The SSN is a group of trained student volunteers who provide a confidential and non-judgmental listening and support system.

The SSN provides opportunities to talk with like-minded students, and is great for helping students transition into university.

The Health and Performance center works closely with each varsity athlete to provide personalized treatment plans that are regularly evaluated and reassessed to ensure the success of the athlete.

The HPC facility works as a team to provide a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and prevention free of charge to all varsity athletes.
